2008 NewsStand Resource 7th Annual Magazine Cover Contest

Consumer Newsstand Categories: (Categories 1–7 must publish 5 times or more.)

  1. Circulation Over 200,000
  2. Circulation 75,000 to 199,999
  3. Circulation 74,999 and under
  4. City, State, Regional and Travel
  5. Special Issues, Annuals, Semi-Annuals and Quarterlies
  6. New Publications – (launched in 2007 or 2008)

Circulation includes newsstand sales, subscriptions and controlled copies. Special issues, annuals or semi-annuals that are not part of a magazine’s regular frequency, but are distributed on the newsstand and are published under the magazine’s name are eligible.

Best of Show” winner will be selected from the gold winners in each of the above categories. The winning cover will be considered the best cover of the year.

Past winners of “Best of Show” include: 2007 – Baltimore Magazine, 2006 – D Magazine, 2005 - Tropical Fish Hobbyist (T.F.H. Publications), 2004 - Portland Magazine (Sargent Publishing), 2003 - Nickelodeon (Viacom) and 2002 - U.S. News & World Report (U.S. News & World Report.)

Who may submit?

Entries must come from the publishing company. There is no restriction on the number of covers you may enter. National distributors, wholesalers and industry professionals should encourage their clients to enter the contest.

Which issues are eligible?

  1. Any issue with an on-sale date in calendar year 2008.
  2. Bi-monthlies with combined December/January issues with on-sale date of December 2006.

Entry format and fees

  • For each entry you must submit one completed entry form. You can download a copy here.
  • Two copies of the cover should accompany entry form and fee. You can mail hard copies to NewsStandResource, P.O. Box 38636, Greensboro, NC 27438, or you can send one cover electronically in a high density (300 dpi). tiff, .jpeg or .pdf format to beckerf@bellsouth.net.
  • Payment must accompany each entry. There are no discounts for multiple entries.
  • Entry fee is $99 per entry. Send check or credit card information. Checks should be made payable to NewsStandResource. Your credit card statements will indicate NewsStand Resource.

Prizes

Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be presented in each category. All Gold winners will receive plaques and certificates and are eligible for the “Best of Show” award. Silver and Bronze winners receive certificates. All winners will receive recognition in the spring 2009 issue of NewsStandResource and at the annual Magazine Publishers of America Retail Conference and in news releases sent to and picked up by trade and daily media. The “Best of Show” winner receives a special plaque and certificate, a full-page advertisement and free enhanced listings during 2009, in NewsStandResource.

All Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will be entered into the 3rd Annual “Readers’ Choice” Cover Contest. Contest will be held in the spring 2009 issue of NewsStandResource.    Our readers will select a Gold, Silver and Bronze winner. Winners will receive certificates and the Gold winner will receive a plaque. Readers’ Choice winners will be featured in the Summer 2009 issue of NewsStandResource and a news release will be sent to and picked up by trade and daily media.

Entries must be received by December 31, 2008.

Judging Criteria

The judging panel includes a retailer, national distributor, wholesaler, art director, and circulation manager.

  3. Cover image and text working together
  4. Typography
  5. Design elements
  6. Sell through
